PC Mick Butler, licensing officer said, “This is not because there is a bigger problem at this particular nightclub. It’s just the staff at Phoenix Security are more proactive at catching people using or carrying drugs into the club. They carry out random searches on entry and are constantly checking the clubs and toilets for people taking drugs. Today Steve Howe, Managing Director of Phoenix, said it was taking over the doors at various other bars and clubs in the city as more licensees were attracted by their zero-tolerance policy.
Mr Howe said, “Drugs are in every club – it’s a reality of today. But we are more proactive about trying to crack down on them. We have female door staff to check women coming in, and the door supervisors regularly patrol the toilets and club floor. If someone is caught we always call the police.
“Our aim is to get drugs out of the clubs and cars we work in, and do that in a professional manner. Our staff are highly trained professionals who do their job very well.”
PC Butler added, “There are many issues with door staff in Sunderland but Phoenix Security are very good. We want every city centre bar and club to follow its lead.”
